Machinery engineer Shayne Ritchings has lived in Mackay since 2003, and been involved in the coal mining industry for nearly 30 years.
Mr Ritchings believes the future is bright for the region but says strong leadership would be required for any transition towards renewable energy.
“I think it is essential that Australia stays in step with the global community … and we should be working on transitioning our electricity generation to be renewable focused,” Mr Ritchings said.
“I would love to see some leadership from our state and federal governments towards establishing the industries of the future in our regions sooner rather than later,” he said.
The Mackay community, including the Ritchings family, are very reliant on the coal mining industry and they do not expect that to change anytime soon.
Mr Ritchings says large resource employers in the Bowen Basin will continue to be significant players long after energy policyshifts towards alternative sources.
“The people in Mackay and the Bowen Basin are hard working and resourceful, they have the skills that could easily adapt toother industries,” he said.
He says more incentives and investment opportunities should be discussed to help usher in the industries of tomorrow.
“Let’s not wait until the last minute like we did with the automotive manufacturing industry.”
