Grand final brawl erupts at Ballymore

The Queensland Rugby Union is investigating after vision emerged of a wild brawl involving spectators and players at the end of the under-20 Colts 1 grand final at Ballymore on Sunday.

An on field push and shove between players right on full-time escalated into a wild melee where some spectators were seen throwing punches.

“We have no comment at this time while we are conducting investigations,” GM Community Rugby Gaven Head told this masthead in relation to the incident.

The on field skirmish between players came on the final play of the game.

The incident was then fuelled when excited Souths supporters invaded the field to congratulate Magpies’ players for their grand final win over Wests - only to find players grappling with each other.

Supporters from both clubs then confronted each other around the grappling players.

“The post-match incident following Colts 1 grand final at Ballymore on Sunday 1st September is completely unacceptable to both Souths rugby union club and the wider rugby community,” Souths club president Derek Thomas said in a statement.

“There is no acceptable excuse or tolerance for abusive or violent behaviour.

“Respecting the rules that keep our players, officials and game safe is non-negotiable.

“The incident will be dealt with by the disciplinary committee within standard process and guidelines.”
