WAMURAN Hockey Club export Jodie Kenny, who grew up as part of the hockey-loving Schulz family, scored her 100th goal for Australia during the Hockeyroos’ 6-1 defeat of India overnight.

Kenny, one of only four experienced Olympians in the 16-strong Australian side in Rio, was sitting on 98 from 180 games for the Hockeyroos before the Olympics.

Before she left Kenny, who won the Hockeyroos’ player of the year and top scorer award with 22 goals last year, said she wanted to “get on the scoresheet a few times”.

And that she did. Overnight Kenny converted from the penalty spot for 5-0 after her penalty shot hit an Indian foot in front of the goal, and following the three-quarter time break, she got her 100th goal.

Australian coach Adam Commens told olympics.com.au Kenny was “one of the best in the world”.

“She’s our number one drag flicker and has been for the last six years that I’ve been involved,” Commens said.

“There have been other moments that there have been some cameos but you don’t score 100 goals without being world class.”

Kenny, 28, said the ultimate goal for the team was to “make the final and grab a medal”.

“We definitely have a team that can get us there,” Kenny said.

The Hockeyroos, who last won Olympic gold in 2000, finished fourth at the recent Champions Trophy in London and headed to Rio ranked number three in the world.

So far the side has lost to Great Britain 2-1, lost to the United States 2-1 and beaten India 6-1; they will face Argentina on Friday at 7am.

“We’ve got what it takes, we just need to get the job done,” Kenny said.
