Voters have named the Far North best sports volunteer and it all came down to just one vote

Cairns City Lions president Shane Law has been named ‘the man with many hats’ by vice president Don Pollock and he now adds another to his long list.

Cairns City Lions president Shane Law has been named ‘the man with many hats’ by vice president Don Pollock and he now adds another to his long list.

Law was voted as the Far North’s best sports volunteer, beating Mareeba Cricket president Irene Roy by one vote.

Pollock said it is credit to the great work he does for the club.

“He has dedicated a lot of his life to helping the footy club, it is a credit to his great work,” Pollock said.

“His whole family put in so much and I think even he would tell you that it isn’t just him.

“But he is a man with many hats, not just president of the club.

“He is always helping out where he can.

“Whether that be team manager or helping in the canteen or behind the bar.

“Even as simple as just helping with the water for the players at the breaks.”

In his time as president at the Lions, he has seen them go from a troubled side to a dual premiership powerhouse.

Under Law’s watch, the Lions broke their 38 year premiership drought.

Pollock said clubs don’t run without volunteers.

“I really want to thank all the volunteers who put their hands up and help out their clubs every week,” Pollock said.

“It is because of you that we can have clubs, competitions and I don’t think they get recognised enough.

“Credit to all of them, not just from the Lions but around the other clubs and sports as well.

“For Shane to win it by one vote just goes to show the level of volunteers there are in the Far North.

“If he wins by a vote and with the amount of work he does then I could only imagine the amount of work the other volunteers do as well.”

Law won with 18 per cent of voters, followed by Irene Roy from Mareeba cricket with 16 per cent with Milan Rebic from Leichhardt Junior Soccer Club rounding out the top three with nine per cent of votes.
