NFL Blitz: News broadcast confuses Peyton Manning with basketballer Gary Payton, Favre text gag, Dockett taunts fans

RECORD-BREAKING QB Peyton Manning is not the same person as former NBA star Gary Payton. One news station hilariously didn’t know.

IT was a week of broken NFL records and late come-from-behind victories, but check out what you might’ve missed around the league.

NEWS STATION LEARNS ABOUT HOMOPHONES

First we were duped when we thought the Broncos keep-away prank on Manning was scripted, and not a spur-of-the-moment celebration as it was presented.

Now the people of Seattle have been deceived into thinking ex-basketballer Gary Payton broke the NFL record for most touchdown passes thrown, when they used a photo of the NBA champion in a news broadcast about the milestone moment. Naturally, a Denver news station jumped on the opportunity to ridicule the mistake. Homophones, people, look into it.

THE ST LOUIS ... WHO?

Be honest, if you walked down the street would you recognise Rams quarterback Austin Davis? You wouldn’t. Because it’s the St Louis Rams, but it seems not even staff at their home-ground know who the players are. Last week, Davis was humbled when a security guard reportedly wouldn’t let him past because he thought he was an impostor.

Maybe that’ll be a little different now they’ve knocked off last season’s Super Bowl champs, Seattle, beating the Seahawks in St Louis.

FAVRE TEXT GAG

The woman who allegedly received those infamous texts depicting legendary Brett Favre’s crown jewels, had her say about Peyton Manning overtaking the record of the former Packers and Vikings quarterback.

While Favre passed on his congratulations to the Broncos veteran, Jennifer Sterger made a lighthearted reference to the 2010 texting controversy.

FULL WRAP OF WEEK SEVEN GAMES IN THE NFL

AUSSIES IN ACTION

Brad Wing was a part of an excellent win for the Steelers against Houston. He averaged 44 yards, with one kick early in the third quarter earning high praise from ESPN’s commentators when it landed within a whisker of the Texans end zone.

His next effort at the start of the final quarter was less impressive after he didn’t strike the ball cleanly and managed only 35 yards. Still, it wasn’t a total disaster, as Pittsburgh earned a hard-fought comeback victory, giving Wing some confidence going forward.

Aussie born rookie guard David Yankey is still inactive with the Vikings and awaiting his first NFL start.

BURFICT MEETS KARMA

In week six Cincinnati’s Vontaze Burfict was caught deliberately and unnecessarily twisting the ankles of opposing players. The rough tactics earned the linebacker a $25,000 fine from the NFL. One week on, and Burfict has been sidelined with a neck injury his coach Marvin Lewis said was a “cervical strain”. You know that old saying, ‘what goes around comes around’?

DON’T INTERRUPT THE COACH

The New Orleans Saints haven’t had a great run of late, and finally the cracks are beginning to show on the former Super Bowl champion outfit. Coach Sean Payton snapped at reporters during his post-game interview. Rubbishing questions he didn’t think were “smart” and telling journalists to “be quiet”, Payton was clearly frustrated by their late one-point loss to Detroit.

A-ROD GETS IN THE WAY

Former New York Yankee Alex Rodriguez was almost collected by Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys as they entered the stadium before the game against the Giants. Baseball fans were probably hoping the disgraced star did get run over by the Cowboys quarterback. Oh well.

BRADY’S BLUE STEEL

New England’s Tom Brady running around with a dog, on a beach, in slow motion, dropping deep metaphors, in black and white — what could be more perfect?

NFL NAME GAME

There’s a lot going against Jarryd Hayne’s quest to become an NFL player. There’s still a chance he can make the dream a reality, but to help him along his way, he might need a name makeover. Jarryd Hayne, just not enough going on there for a potential NFL player. Way too white bread. So we’ve taken the liberty of compiling some alternative name options for the former Parramatta Eels star.

— L’Jarryd Hayne

— Jarrydius Hayne

— DeJarryd Hayne

— JL Hayne III

— Ja Rryd Hayne

— Jarryd TP Hayne (as in ‘The Plane’)

- J’ryyd Hayne

— Jarrydz Hayne

You’re welcome, Mr Hayne.

DOCKETT TAUNTS RAIDERS FANS

The poor Oakland Raiders. They just can’t win. Not once, all season. They are a terrible football team, and everyone knows it. But Arizona’s Darnell Dockett got way too cocky in front of their long-suffering fans, actively trash-talking supporters in California. Dockett was listed as inactive for the game, but his ability with a whiteboard marker wasn’t affected as he taunted Oakland’s awful 0-6 record during the game.

FANTASY WATCH

Carson Palmer — With the likes of Matt Ryan and Jay Cutler struggling in week seven, if your QB stocks need replenishing, look to the Cardinals general Palmer. Arizona’s offence is loaded with explosive pass-catchers able to boost the quarterback’s points potential.

Lamar Miller — Knowshon Moreno is done for 2014, and Miller has been a reliable go-to option in both the passing and running game in Miami.

Odell Beckham Jnr — Rookie wide receivers aren’t as scary a prospect as they once were and the LSU grad has showed he’s more than ready to fill the void left by Victor Cruz in the Giants offence.

Jerrell Freeman celebrates after a defensive stop during the game against Cincinnati.

Indianapolis D — After a rocky start, coach Chuck Pagano’s overachieving defence has strung together over amonth of fantasy consistency at a fairly unpredictable position.

Bryce Brown — C.J. Spiller is done for the year and Fred Jackson is facing a month on the sideline, so opportunity beckons for the former Eagle who has shown flashes of brilliance in the past.

VINCE LOMBARDI QUOTE OF THE WEEK

This one is for Percy Harvin. He has a Super Bowl ring, but was sensationally traded to the New York Jets this week with speculation growing about his lockeroom behaviour and off-field problems leading to the move. There’s one way to get that career back on track, Percy — hard work.

“Football is a great deal like life in that it teaches that work, sacrifice, perseverance, competitive drive, selflessness and respect for authority is the price that each and every one of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.”
