THIS is ice hockey’s Mankad moment. A horrendous piece of sportsmanship from American Hockey league goaltender David Leggio that has gone viral and won him undeserved fame.
The experienced minor league net minder has been hailed in some quarters for his “brilliant” thinking while the AHL rule makers have been forced to change the rules because of his brazen act.
Alone and facing a two man break, Leggio flips over his net so the rival Falcons couldn’t score.
Officials awarded the Falcons a penalty shot, leaving Leggio facing one opponent, rather than two, and he made the save.
The AHL was not amused and next time a goaltender pulls the same stunt they’ll face a ban rather than just an on ice penalty.
Thanks Mr Deadspin! â@Deadspin: Brilliant goalie knocks over his own net rather than face a 2-on-0: http://t.co/Tr1fFkFQsHâ

“Maybe they’ll change the rule,” Leggio said before the AHL took action. Name it after me, no big deal. I was just trying to make a play to help my team win.”
