Michael Chandler came back from the dead to nearly steal his lightweight showdown with Charles Oliviera at UFC 309 on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.
The American was beaten and bruised badly in the opening four rounds, but one devastating strike in the fifth round turned the fight on its head.
UFC commentator Joe Rogan was stunned by the drama as Chandler missed his golden moment to finish Oliviera while he was landing hammer fists on the floor.
Chandler had no right to be in that position.
Oliviera pulled off takedowns in all four earlier rounds and on multiple occasions had his opponent in choke holds.
Instead, Chandler survived to the bell each time. Oliviera’s failure to finish Chandler when opportunities presented almost proved fatal when Chandler came out blasting in the fifth.

After rocking Oliviera with a hook that blurred the former champion’s vision, Chandler put Oliviera on the floor and moved into a mount.
With Oliviera in a messy position with arms locked, Chandler was able to land a flurry of elbows to the back of his opponents head.
Those elbows appeared to be illegal strikes, but referee Keith Peterson ignored the outcry from the crowd.
Oliviera was able to slip out and got back to his feet, but Chandler kept huntinh him until the final bell.
Chandler showed what a force he was in the fifth found by suplexing Oliviera onto his back.
“That fifth round was one of the greatest rounds I’ve ever seen in my life,” Rogan said on ESPN.
“Oh my goodness”.
When discussing Chandler, Rogan said: “He is such an animal”.
Earlier commentator Jon Anik said it had been a “systematic destruction by Charles Oliveira”.
The former champ was almost untouched in the first four rounds and his performance was fitting of the victory.
Oliviera now stands as the man most likely to get the next title shot in the lightweight division.
