Tributes flow in for Andrew Symonds following shock death

Police have provided an update on the investigation into a crash which killed cricket legend Andrew Symonds at the weekend, saying many questions are still left unanswered.

About 11pm on Saturday, Symonds was driving along Hervey Range Rd at Alice River when his car veered off the road and crashed.

Neighbours tried to revive the 46-year-old, but he could not be saved.

The Forensic Crash Unit are investigating all avenues, including whether alcohol was a factor, and whether Symonds was wearing a seatbelt.

On Monday morning, several bunches of flowers and tributes were left at the site where Symonds died.

An Australian Flag was erected in the soil nearby a collection of notes, a beer, flowers and a book.

Symonds’ sister, Louise also left a note saying her heart was broken.

Townsville Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Lawson said a post mortem was yet to be conducted.

“That will depend on when a doctor can be flown up (to Townsville),” Superintendent Lawson said.

The Townsville Bulletin understands there is not a designated doctor in the region who can conduct these types of procedures.

It’s understood this has caused delays, and a doctor has to be organised and flown in from the southeast.

Queensland Health has been contacted for comment.

Police are still unsure why Symonds’ was travelling back towards Townsville on the rural stretch of road, but it’s understood he was a keen hunter.

Symonds’ two blue healer dogs survived the crash.

It’s understood the dogs are now in the care of his family.

Symonds’ death is the third to hit the Australian cricket community in 2022.

His death follows the shock passing of cricket legend Shane Warne and Rod Marsh, both in March.

Members of the Townsville sporting community were shattered to hear of Symonds’ passing.

He has been large part of the region’s cricket and rugby union scene since retiring from professional sport.

In his career, Symonds played 26 Tests, 198 One Day Internationals and 14, T20 Internationals, among other accomplishments.
