Nick Kyrgios out of Australian Open after defeat to Milos Raonic

Nick Kyrgios spent two-and-a-half hours complaining that his knee was “f***ed” before delivering a typically moody press conference during which he addressed rumours of in-fighting with Lleyton Hewitt.

Nick Kyrgios’ expletive-laden Australian Open cameo is over with the Australian declaring his knee was “f**ked” throughout a straight-sets loss to Milos Raonic, before a stroppy press conference when he was quizzed about Bernard Tomic’s comments on Lleyton Hewitt.

The frustrated and animated 23-year-old was vocal throughout the 6-4 7-6 (5) 6-4 first round loss to the 16th-seed Canadian, with the injury flaring up midway through the first set of the slugfest.

“I don’t know how it could get so painful in the space of f**king three games,” he told the trainer during his first treatment, during which his right knee was strapped.

“I’m trying my nuts off, and when I try my nuts off, f**k my knee starts hurting.”

He went on: “I don’t know, but f**k man, this is a joke.”

Kyrgios later declared “it hurts to walk” and “I’ve just given up basically”.

“I’ve taken four tablets and it’s gotten worse. It’s f**king terrible. By this stage, it’s f–ked.
“It feels like dogs–t, mate. Absolute dogs**t,” he told the trainer.

He was then hit with a code violation for abuse after hitting a ball into the crowd of Melbourne Arena in anger and directed questions toward his player box.

Kyrgios’ post-match press conference was just as erratic as he refused to weigh-in on the bubbling tensions between Davis Cup captain Hewitt and the Australian tennis ‘Brat Pack’.

The brash Aussie was named by countryman Tomic as one of a trio that “didn’t want to play (Davis Cup) because (Hewitt) has ruined the system”, but Kyrgios maintained he would be willing to play if afforded the opportunity.

“Yeah. I don’t think I’d be picked,” he said.

“There’s a lot of good players right now. Obviously (Alex) De Minaur, (John) Millman, they’re all playing great.

“There’s a lot of depth, which is pretty good for us.”

Kyrgios declared he thought the furore surrounding the comments was “ridiculous” and “pretty sad”.

When asked whether he supported Hewitt as captain, Kyrgios replied “sure”.

When asked if there was rift between him and Hewitt he replied, “not really”.

When a reporter replied “not really?”, Kyrgios responded: “Is there an echo in here?”

When asked by an American reporter: “What is it like being part of a tennis country that makes this much news of this stuff all the time, is it fun, is it exhausting?”

Kyrgios replied: “I think its ridiculous to be honest.

“With all the issues going on in the world we are focusing on someone’s comments about Davis Cup. It’s pretty sad, it’s pretty sad.”

Seven-time grand slam champion John McEnroe didn’t hold back in his criticism of the young Aussie, suggesting a lack of dedication to training could be behind his string of injury complaints.

“Does he not train enough because the body breaks down? Or does the body break down because you don’t train enough,” McEnroe said in Channel 9’s commentary.

“He wouldn’t know because he hasn’t trained hard enough to know.

“You’ve got to try the other way before you dismiss it.”

Raonic stayed cool throughout, seemingly blocking out Kyrgios and engaging in breathing techniques with his eyes closed before he prepared to serve out the match, sealing victory with an ace after just under two hours.

“It’s tough (to block that out), it’s tough against Nick anyway, because he takes the match through so many emotions,” Raonic said.

“It’s very important that you stay on top of yourself. It was great to get some support … it’s onto the next one.”
