A serving master-class has catapulted Sydney-born Johanna Konta to the brink of French Open history.
Konta destroyed last season’s finalist and US Open winner Sloane Stephens 6-1 6-4 in their quarter-final on Tuesday night to ridicule years of failure on slow, red clay.
Until this season, Konta had never won a match at Roland Garros.
She is now the first British woman to reach the last four, where she will face either Croat 31st seed Petra Martic or unseeded Czech Marketa Vondrousova for a place in Saturday’s final.
A semi-finalist at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, Konta conceded only five points on her first serve in a miserably one-sided contest.
Konta, who began her career in Australian colours before switching allegiances to Britain in 2012.
Sue Barker in 1976 is the last British female to win the French Open.
