IF you are going to create history then you may as well do it on cycling’s most famous stage in front of your parents and fiancee.
Aussie Chloe Hosking ticked all the boxes when she outsprinted Finland’s Lotta Lepisto and Dutch cycling superstar Marianne Vos to claim the 2016 La Course by Tour de France on the Champs-Élysées.
On the cobblestones which later hosted the finish of the Tour de France, the Wiggle High5 rider lived up to her pre-race favouritism to grab Australia’s first-ever victory in the women’s WorldTour event.
“To cross the line with my hands in the air was just crazy,” said the 25-year-old from Canberra.
“I just kept riding after the finish and people probably thought I was a bit weird.
“But my family and my fiance are about 200m past the finish line, so I just wanted to go and see them. I think we’re all in a bit of disbelief at the moment.”
The now annual race for women was marred by numerous crashes, including three on the final lap which involved some of her teammates.
“My team were incredible,” Hosking said.
“I’m so lucky. Amy Roberts never gave up, and Audrey Cordon kept me safe in the final laps.”
In its third year, the 89km road race in Paris is now established as the curtain-raiser to the final stage of the Tour de France.
The win marked Hosking’s fourth of the year in the UCI women’s WorldTour after success in the Tour of Chongming Island in May and Giro d’Italia Femminile earlier this month.
