GLEN Boss will have to weave his magic in Saturday's Mackinnon Stakes on Jet Away if he's to have a ride in next Tuesday's Melbourne Cup.

Jet Away was left at number 30 in the order of entry after yesterday's second acceptances for the Cup.

It means he needs to win the Mackinnon to earn his place in the field. Trainer David Hayes said he may freshen the horse and go to Perth for the Railway Stakes next month if he misses a Cup run.

A 1kg penalty for Moonee Valley Cup winner Precedence only pushed him to 29th on the list, meaning he will either have to back up on Saturday or hope for a high attrition rate if Bart Cummings is to have his 88th Melbourne Cup runner.

Precedence risks being pushed two further places down the list with Saturday's Mackinnon Stakes and Lexus both carrying automatic entry to the Cup. All bar three of the top 21 in the Lexus need to win to ensure a start.

Precedence has been nominated for both races as a precaution. "The preference was not to run on Derby Day,'' Cummings' co-training grandson James said yesterday.

"We might still roll the dice and keep him home on Saturday, but we have nominated him for the Mackinnon and the Lexus just in case.

"If we do decide to run him again, at least the horse has only had three starts this spring. It is not like he has had a lot of racing so he has still got fresh legs.''

Racing Victoria's chief handicapper Greg Carpenter said history wasn't on the side of those outside the top 24.

"Last year at this time, the horse that was 24th in order ended up being 24th into the field," Carpenter said.
"Kelinni leapfrogged into the field by winning the Lexus and only one dropped out, so you would say those too far outside are in trouble.

"The only one I'm aware of that's a big doubt is Foreteller (12th) and possibly Mr Moet."

Carpenter can penalise the winner of the Lexus, but has elected not to do so in the past two years.

Maluckyday received 1kg for his impressive win in 2010, but the year before, Shocking received no penalty before going onto win the Cup three days later.
