JOCKEY Glen Colless turned in the ride of the month to land promising galloper Black Jet a winner at Doomben yesterday.

Black Jet ($4.80) came from second last on the fence at the 700m to beat Renewed Vitality ($2.70) by 3/4 length with a 1/2 length to Micken ($8) in the Carlton Draught Handicap (1600m).

Trainer Liam Birchley was full of praise for Colless who has rarely ridden in better form.

"That was the way to ride Black Jet and there are few better around than Glen," Birchley said.

He said Black Jet was a big gangly horse who was improving all the time.

Birchley hopes to set Black Jet for the $200,00 Magic Millions Stayers Cup (1800m) on January 11.

"It will be a step up in class but I think he is ready to make it," Birchley said.

Colless agreed and said Black Jet was a horse on untested potential, who deserved his shot at a big race.

"Don't forget it is a race restricted to Magic Millions horses, so it is always a winnable race," he said.

Jockey Tim Bell employed runaway tactics on heavily backed favourite Renewed Vitality, who led around the turn and fought on well.

Micken was given the run of the race and fought on well in the straight.
