TRAINER Gerald Ryan reckons you don't change a winning formula. If he's right, Charlie Boy will be a major player in tomorrow's $1 million Magic Millions Guineas on the Gold Coast.

Ryan says the three-year-old son of Myboycharlie races best when fresh, as his record of two wins and a third from three campaigns shows.

So he is punting on the same formula that resulted in Charlie Boy coming off two trials to win the Listed Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington in September.

"I'm using the same pattern this time. I always intended to run him fresh. He had two trials, with eight days between the second trail and the race, to win the Danehill," Ryan said.

" I've given him the exact same lead-up to the Guineas and I'm confident it will suit him perfectly."

Ryan said Charlie Boy had matured since his spring campaign, which culminated with a mid-field finish in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas.

"He looks bigger and he is fitter, better than ever," Ryan said. "He will get 1400m no worries. He will jump from barrier 11 or 12 but I don't mind that because I'd prefer he is not boxed in because he doesn't like horses around him.

"If he gets any luck he'll be right in the thick of it."

Punters have not forgotten Charlie Boy's Flemington win. TAB rates him the $8 third favourite behind Equare ($4.60).

Meanwhile, the Mick Price-trained Nordic Empire has been scratched from the Magic Millions 2YO Classic after vets confirmed muscle tears.

He has a couple of tears in the hamstring, and a tear where the muscle attaches to his hip.

"He should be right in about six to eight weeks," Price said. "I think he is going to be a nice horse if we give him his chance to mature."

His scratching elevated the Liam Birchley-trained Sagatona into the final field of 16, leaving the Peter Moody-trained Pink Perfection the first emergency.

Price will still be represented in the $2 million race by Geromayo, who ran second to Unencumbered in the Magic Millions contest at Wyong.

"The horse has improved a lot. I think he will be in the thick end of the money on Saturday," he said.
