Cellarmaid trainer Kelly Schweida doesn’t share the confidence of punters in new feature race

Trainer Kelly Schweida will be hoping punters are correct in their assessment of his potential Queensland Oaks contender Cellarmaid when she contests the inaugural running of The Wave.

Ladbrokes Latemail 2020: AFL Edition

Punters have warmed to the filly Cellarmaid more so than her trainer Kelly Schweida has ahead of Saturday’s inaugural running of The Wave on the Gold Coast.

Cellarmaid opened around the double-figure odds mark on Wednesday, but had trimmed to $7 with Ladbrokes on Friday after consistent backing for the filly.

Apprentice Jackson Murphy will ride Cellarmaid at 51kg, but Schweida feels she has a few things against her on Saturday.

“I think she’s a little under the odds. She’s racing some really handy seasoned horses,” Schweida said.

“She has no tactical advantage in a race, gets back and has to come wide.

“I know she has the light weight, but in saying that, whether 1800m at the Gold Coast suits is another deal too.

“I don’t want to knock her too much, but it does concern me whether this is all getting to her a bit quick.”

Schweida hopes Cellarmaid can progress into a Queensland Oaks filly, as she’s giving every indication she will appreciate that kind of staying test.

“She will run 2000m on her ear I think,” he said.

“The way she races, I don’t think it will be a problem and to be honest she’s probably crying out for 2000m already.”

Stablemate Magic Fox will be allowed to find his feet again when he runs in the $250,000 Rising Stars (colts, geldings and entires, 1300m).

Magic Fox ($15) has charged to the line in both runs this time in and his trainer says that is the best way to ride him again.

“His two best runs have been when we’ve ridden him back,” Schweida said.

“He’s really attacked the line, whereas when we dug him up he didn’t go as good.”

Meanwhile, co-trainer Chris Meagher is excited about the prospect of easing Wave favourite Trevelyan ($5) stepping out in distance again.

The son of Pierro is stoutly bred on his dam’s side, but to this point, has only gone beyond 1600m once, where he had no luck in running.

“I know his best form to date has been at 1600m but we have been keen to get him back out to 1800m,” Meagher said.

“The Gold Coast should present no problems for him, and he is a real trier.

“He seems to race best (with his runs spaced) and we can keep him ticking over in the lead-up to his races.”

WINTER JUST KEEPS GETTING HOTTER

Racing Queensland continues to add to this year’s winter carnival, with a new $200,000 race for QTIS registered horses announced on Saturday.

The QTIS Gold Jewel will be run on Queensland Oaks day over 1300m.

It follows the announcement of the $1.5M Q22 and $150,000 Pam O’Neill being added to this year’s Brisbane Racing Club carnival.

Racing Queensland GM Corporate Affairs Mary Collier said QTIS is the best thoroughbred incentive scheme in Australia and noted there was also $1.7 million in QTISx sales vouchers available across this year’s carnival.

The Gold Jewel will be run on the middle day of three consecutive Group 1 Saturdays at Eagle Farm in May and June.
