Super Netball trade rumours: Sasha Glasgow’s stocks rise; Giant wins international coaching post

Sasha Glasgow will make an off-season Super Netball switch after confirming she’s exiting the West Coast Fever – and the in-demand goaler’s bargaining power just skyrocketed.

Sasha Glasgow’s Super Netball bargaining power has just increased after the in-demand goaler was named to make her international debut for England in the Roses’ three-match tour of New Zealand later this month.

Glasgow, who qualifies for England through her UK-born parents, was named in the Roses’ wider 2023-24 netball squad earlier this year and announced overnight, as expected, as part of England’s touring team for the Taini Jamison Trophy series in New Zealand.

The Roses have named a development side for the series, with none of the 12-player squad who made the final of the recent World Cup in South Africa selected.

But they had just three specialist goalers in that side, as well as reserve Sophie Drakeford-Lewis – who has been named for the series against the Silver Ferns – and Glasgow will be determined to make a lasting impression in a bid to step up to a more regular role in the future.

The goal attack and goal shooter posted a link to England Netball’s team announcement to her Instagram story on Thursday, adding the word “proud” over vision of her training in the England kit.

The former West Coast player – who has been strongly linked with SEN’s new southeast Melbourne franchise – informed the Fever at the weekend that she would not be returning to Perth next season, confirming a move, if not the actual destination given the ongoing delay over the Collective Player Agreement (CPA), which is preventing any new Super Netball contracts from being signed.

While several clubs are interested in securing Glasgow’s services, she’s likely to investigate the new franchise strongly given plenty of mail linking England shooter Eleanor Cardwell to a move from Adelaide to link with former Roses coach and southeast Melbourne coach Tracey Neville.

The prospect of a combination between the pair is likely to be mouth-watering to officials at the new franchise, as well as the Roses, who have seen several of their players blossom in Super Netball.

Glasgow, who was eligible to play for both England and Australia, nominated for the Roses earlier this year after being left out of the Diamonds’ 2023-24 squad.

Another player heading to New Zealand is former Vixens and Thunderbirds midcourter Elle McDonald, who was born in England before moving to Australia as a child but returned to England last year, linking with Leeds in the UK Superleague before making her Test debut with the Roses again Jamaica in January.

The tour also marks another step in the coaching journey of Giants player Harten, who will join regular Roses technical coach, Liana Leota, also head coach of Superleague side Leeds Rhinos, and London Pulse head coach, Sam Bird, on staff for the New Zealand tour.

Leota will step in as head coach in the absence of Jess Thirlby, who like her players has earnt a post-World Cup break ahead of the South Africa series, with Harten coming on board as an assistant after her role as a specialist coach at the World Cup.

The new club Super Netball club may not be able to sign players yet but is getting on with the contracting it can though, adding experienced administrator Shae Bolton-Brown as general manager of netball operations after recently signing Chris Howley as head of high performance.
