No new cases as Qld Premier reveals new Olympics detail

The Premier says there is ‘no better day to be a Queenslander than today’ after it was revealed the state could be just weeks away from winning the 2032 Olympic Games bid.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has delivered new information about the state’s Olympic bid, after it was revealed the state is just weeks away from securing the 2032 Games.

The International Olympic Committee executive board recommended overnight that the Brisbane bid should be put to a full vote in July.

According to an independent economic assessment released along with the IOC executive decision, the Games would deliver a total benefit of $8.1bn for Queensland and $17.61bn for Australia and create 91,600 years of full time equivalent jobs for Queensland.

Speaking at a press conference this morning, the Premier said winning the Games would set Queensland up for the future.

“There’s no better day to be a Queenslander than today,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“We have moved the next most significant step on our journey, our quest, to attain the 2032 Olympic Games.

“This is an incredibly proud moment for every single Queenslander.”

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate also welcomed the news, despite his council opting to pull out of the Council of Mayors that has championed the bid.

“We are one step closer … great news for the SEQ region,’’ he said.

“It just goes to show what can be achieved when we work together. I know we would not even be in the running to host the 2032 Olympics if it was not for the great success of GC2018, and the 2018 Sports Accord.

“Gold Coasters can feel proud that their efforts in 2018 have now seen the entire region edge closer to a decision regarding the 2032 Olympics.’’

Under the bid, the Coast would host the Olympic beach volleyball and triathlon events.

Mayor Tate said the Gold Coast’s decision to leave the Council of Mayors on June 30 was based on logic and would save ratepayers $1 million in membership fees.

“This bid started out as an SEQ2032 bid and of course, we were all on board with that. It was actually branded SEQ2032,” he said.

“Today, we see that it has been officially branded Brisbane2032. I suspect this was always going to be the case.

“That said, I want everyone to know that we still fully support today’s announcement but I see no value in staying on the Council of Mayors for the remainder of our council term when it will be Brisbane-centric going forward.

“I’m confident that the type of city deals the Gold Coast needs to strike with he State and Federal Government can be managed by our council, direct.’’
