Organisers of Brisbane’s 2032 Games will travel to every summer and Winter Olympics in the next decade for a first-hand look at how the mammoth sporting events should be run.
Members of Brisbane’s yet-to-be established Games organising committee will join the International Olympic Committee’s “experience program” from Paris 2024 where they will receive first-class treatment and an inside look at how to run an Olympics.
“We will also work together to design specific programs for the involvement of interested parties in the Paris, Milano Cortina and Los Angeles Games so that the organisers can gain as much experience as possible,” an IOC spokesman said.
Organisers of the Beijing 2022, Paris 2024, Milano Cortina 2026 and Los Angeles 2028 summer and Winter Olympics have spent 42 days in Japan for the Tokyo Games Experience Programme.
Future host cities are given an inside look at the Olympics’ main operations centre, venue operations and sport-specific requirements, which Tokyo 2020 spokeswoman Masa Takaya said was invaluable.
“I was able to participate in three Games in the past – Sochi, Rio and PyeongChang,” she said.
“Each of those was a great opportunity to listen and learn from their experiences.”
Groundwork has started to determine the make-up of the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee – a pivotal group responsible for planning and delivering the global spectacle in 11 years.
Brisbane’s committee is likely to include a team of executives with diverse corporate, events, technical and communications experience.
Under the 50-50 Olympics partnership agreement the state and federal governments will negotiate the membership of the committee, which is set to be incorporated by the end of the year.
The Courier-Mail can also reveal the IOC has already started foundation work to promote Brisbane’s 2032 Games as an “appealing and cool brand”.
“With 11 years to go, we have a great opportunity to work on pre-Games legacies,” the IOC said.
“At this point in time, it is important to work on the engagement of all Australia, the youth in particular.
“It is also key to build the 2032 brand and its attributes to make it an appealing and cool brand alongside Team Australia.”
The quality of Australia’s sporting federations and government support – two pillars that helped Brisbane win the Games – means detailed planning of sporting events won’t start for some time.
“Considering the strength of Australian sports, especially their organising capabilities, the Games planning will start at a later stage,” the IOC said.
