Australian Olympic Committee boss Matt Carroll has warned three levels of government to avoid playing politics to ensure a significant legacy is left after Brisbane’s Olympic flame is extinguished.

The powerful AOC boss, in a speech to CEDA’s Legacy Led Brisbane 2032 lunch in Brisbane, said it was critical local, state and commonwealth governments worked together to take advantage of the opportunities of the Games.

“We all welcome the enthusiasm across the community for the hosting of the Games and the legacy that can be delivered before the Games and after but we need to do it as a team,” he said.

Mr Carroll likened the legacy opportunities of Brisbane 2032 to rowing.

“If you’re not pulling your weight or in time – everyone knows that you are letting the team down,” he said.

The Australian sports industry provides $83bn in direct economic, productivity and volunteering benefits each year, which Mr Carroll said could be leveraged to solve significant challenges.

“Sport plays an important role in the Australian community for our collective health, addressing the nation’s obesity crises, chronic diseases, mental health, and personal development,” he said.

“Sport strengthens our communities, contributes to Australia’s economy, research, international diplomacy and most importantly, sporting excellence builds national pride and motivation.”

Mr Carroll cited Australia’s obesity crisis, which is forecast to add $87bn in costs to the economy by 2025.

“Sport can help make a difference in this crisis – sport can save the economy a bundle,” he said.

Mr Carroll said the Australian Olympic Committee had adopted a vision to plan for the 10 years before and after the 2032 Games.

“The awarding of a Games a decade out, is a generational gift … one that probably won’t come our way again this side of the 22nd century,” he said.

The AOC boss has also called for governments to better consult the sports industry in a range of policy areas including diplomacy, trade, infrastructure and tourism “to reflect the broader value of sports”.
