Matildas striker Sam Kerr has again shown she is a superstar on and off the pitch, with two classy acts delighting lucky young fans in Brisbane after the quarter-final win over France.
As she walked off the Brisbane Stadium on Saturday after the dramatic penalty shootout victory, Kerr handed her jersey to nine-year-old local Zara Borcak.
“My sister and my cousin were screaming at Sam as she walked off,” Zara said.
“She gave me a hug and I was screaming, ‘Please can I have the jersey?’
“This feeling will last forever, or at least until the World Cup ends.”
Zara’s sister Hanna said they were all shaking with emotion afterwards.
“There were a lot of people on the other side of the tunnel who wanted it, one even had a sign saying: ‘Sam, give me your jersey’,” Hanna said.
“In the end, I think we were just yelling the most.”
Zara’s dream is to walk out with Kerr for Wednesday’s semi-final.
“I want to get it (jersey) framed, but I want to get her signature on it,” Zara said.
“I would love to go to Sydney with my sisters.”
On Sunday, a crowd of dedicated fans waited outside the Matildas’ Brisbane hotel.
As the players emerged, Kerr came out with a signed pair of her boots and gave them to two diehard fans – Vienna, 11, and Amalia, 8, Gergely-Hollai.
“She was walking to the bus, she stopped, came to me, and gave me the boots. She just waved, she didn’t say anything,” Vienna said.
The girls and their dad, Steven, had been camped outside the hotel for two hours. He said Kerr’s boots will go into a glass box and somehow split between the sisters’ bedrooms.
“We were here yesterday and when she (Kerr) went out and came back this morning, she did a double take and realised the girls had been standing in the front row forever,” he said.
“We’ve come from Sydney and we have travelled around Australia to cheer them on.”
