KURTLEY Beale has the ability to play a similar role to the great David Campese on the wing for the Wallabies, according to World Cup-winning coach Bob Dwyer.

Speculation is rife the NSW Waratahs’ No 12 will be selected on the wing for the Rugby Championship, starting against South Africa at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on July 18, and Dwyer likes the idea.

“Kurtley Beale is a guy who does things rather than a guy who makes things,” said the 1991 World Cup-winning coach.

“The guy who does things is ideally placed in the back three.

“I don’t want to play him in the midfield because he is not a guy who makes space for other players.”

Campese starred in Dwyer’s side that lifted the Webb Ellis Cup.

Dwyer says Beale can do the same for coach Michael Cheika, whose side play four Tests before the World Cup in September-October in the United Kingdom.

“He’s the same as Campo, whose workrate on both sides of the pitch ... across on his opposite wing and covering for fullback was second to none.

“There has never been a player in world rugby who has had a higher workrate as Campo in that regard and Kurtley could do the same.

“Kurtley could come in at first receiver from blindside or an inside pass or outside the first receiver.

“Kurtley is seriously quick too, especially over 40 metres. I think it’s ideal ... I like him there.”
