AN influential tweet from a Tongan rugby deity may have increased the chance of schoolboy sensation “Tongan Thor” chasing a dream to play for the Wallabies.
Eighteen-year-old Kiwi student Taniela Tupou has become a YouTube sensation after 135 kilogram prop scored three tries last weekend, and the Daily Telegraph revealed amid interest from league clubs, European, New Zealand and Aussie rugby, he wants to play in Australia.
The Australian desire us due to strong Tongan connections here, and Israel Folau used Twitter to urge the ARU and the Tahs to get busy.
“Taniela Tupou — Tongan Thor. Now this guy can play! Check him out. @NSWWaratahs #SignHimUp @QantasWallabies,” Folau tweeted.
The impact of the tweet on young Tupou can’t be dismissed, with Folau idolised in Tonga. The dual international even cited the brotherly embrace of the Waratahs’ “Team Tonga” players in his decision to re-sign with rugby last year.
