Having scored tries for fun last year, Queensland Reds winger Tim Ryan has focused on other aspects of his game this season.

A try-scoring machine in his debut Super Rugby Pacific season, Reds winger Tim Ryan isn’t concerned by his lack of five-pointers in Queensland’s 2025 campaign.
Instead, a year on from first Reds starting debut, in which he scored a hat-trick of tries in Queensland’s 41-34 loss to the Blues, Ryan is more concerned his team turns the tables on the Auckland-based side when they meet in Friday night’s Anzac Day clash at Suncorp Stadium.
“Everyone loves a try, but if the team’s winning, it doesn’t really matter if I score zero or three tries,” Ryan said.
Ryan’s three tries against the Blues started a run of nine five-pointer in seven games, including another hat-trick in Queensland’s 59-13 win over Western Force on May 25.
However, this season, he has only scored one try in six appearances.
“There are other aspects as a winger, not just scoring tries,” he said.
“You’ve got back-field kicking, defence – that’s all stuff I try to focus on.
“There’s a physical aspect there and I’ve put on a little bit of weight ... I’m just trying to get better at footy.”

Ryan, 21, conceded that his performances as a relative unknown last season had opponents more aware of him this year.
“I’m sure they’re seeing a lot more of me this year through clips than they did last year. It’s something I’m just going to have to adapt to and better myself as a player,” he said.
After back-to-back losses before their Easter weekend bye, the fourth-placed Reds are hoping to rediscover winning form against the Blues, the reigning competition champions who haven’t reached the same heights in their title defence, having lost six from nine.
Despite their ordinary form, the Blues remain dangerous with an attacking arsenal that includes Beauden Barrett, Caleb Clarke, Rieko Ioane and Mark Tele’a.
“It’s star-studded backline, that’s for sure,” Ryan said.
“You’ve got to have that awareness that they can pull anything out of anywhere and try to limit that capability ... and limit their opportunities.”
