Cameron Clark’s impressive performances for the Waratahs have earned the former Sevens star a spot in the Wallabies’ World Cup train-on squad, the first without fallen superstar Israel Folau.
The speedster hasn’t put a foot wrong in his 10 matches for NSW this season and the selectors have taken enough notice to invite him to join the Australian squad camp in Brisbane.
He’s still an outsider to make the World Cup squad but his call up to the pre-tournament camp suggests he’s inching closer after his best season yet.
Clark’s scored two tries this year and made more line busts than every other NSW back other than Folau and Kurtley Beale, but it’s his rock solid defence that’s really caught the eye.
Against the Sharks, he dropped Springbok winger Makazole Mapimpi with a perfectly time hit that two-time World Cup winner Tom Horan declared the tackle of the season.
Clark’s Waratahs teammate Jed Holloway has also been added to Michael Cheika’s train-on squad after serving a three-match ban for elbowing Sharks prop Thomas du Toit in the head.
With so much competition for backrow spots, the uncapped Holloway didn’t do himself any favours when he lost his cool and got sent off against the Sharks, but has been given another chance to press his claims.
The most notable absentee from the three-day camp is Folau, whose contract was turn up last week, but everyone’s quickly adjusting to life without him.
Cheika’s been in constant contact with Folau’s best friends in the squad to check on their wellbeing and reassuring them of his support, so when they got together for the camp, there was no team to address the issues and so everyone got straight on with the job at hand.
