Rugby World Cup 2019 | Wallabies streaker commits cultural blunder

Kurtley Beale admits he got taken by surprise when a nude Wallabies supporter approached him for a high five. WARNING: explicit images.

Kurtley Beale has had a surprise run-in with a streaker who brought new meaning to sushi roll when he bared his in front of more than 33,000 fans at the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

The Wallabies fullback said he was “spooked” by the surprise on-field dash by the Aussie fan who has landed in hot water.

Police reportedly had the young Australian man in custody after Australia’s 45-10 victory over Uruguay in Oita on Saturday.

Our adventurous streaker attempted to high-five Beale, who rocked back on his heels stunned and clearly uninterested.

He was nude but for a billowing kimono-style Wallabies supporters’ shirt that didn’t reach his buttocks.

When Fox Sports Rugby joked on Twitter that perhaps a “Missed tackle stat” should be recorded against him, Beale responded: “I’m afraid there wasn’t much to tackle...” with a bulging eyes emoji.

With tickets upwards of $200 a shot for some seats, the streaker will be sad indeed if he is banned from the rest of the tournament for breaching the rules about not entering the field of play.

“He got me good, real good,” Beale said with a laugh post-match.

“He caught me by surprise. I heard the crowd like cheering and I thought, ‘what’s going on?

“Are they cheering the ball just being in the ruck.’

“All of a sudden I felt something come by my left shoulder.

“He spooked me.

“I don’t think he got caught. He went back into the stands and enjoyed the rest of the game.”

It was swimming weather at 26 degrees outside Oita’s stadium and hot enough inside under the roof to build a big thirst for the cold Heinekens served by can girls in the stands.

Public nudity is frowned on in Japan but streakers do have a history at World Cups.

In 1999, the Wallabies opened their winning World Cup with a match against Romania at the Ravenhill ground in Belfast.

A Tasmanian streaker cartwheeled a welcome to the Wallabies...and happily returned to her seat without bother from good-spirited Irish security guards who admired her braving the cold single-digit degree temperatures.

Personally, we would have liked to see an Andrew Symonds style shoulder charge from Beale but you can’t blame the guy for wanting no part of it.

Streaking has had a bit of a resurgence in the past year with some high profile disruptions to major matches.

There was the Champions League final where a female streaker earned a reported $6.9 million of advertising for her boyfriend’s website.

There was a cricket World Cup streaker who beat several tackles before his nude adventure ended.

Even closer to home, there were several incidents at Parramatta’s Bankwest Stadium as fans christened the ground.
