Josh Nasser, the teenage son of a former Wallaby, has been signed by the Queensland Reds as part of a strong homegrown accent on recruiting for the future.

Josh Nasser, the teenage son of a former Wallaby, has been signed by the Queensland Reds as part of a strong homegrown accent on recruiting for the future.

The young prop has the right genes as the offspring of Brendan Nasser, the no-nonsense backrower who finished his eight-Test run for the Wallabies against Samoa at the 1991 World Cup.

Nasser, 19, is already sturdy 114kg and is one of six up-and-comers recognised with developing squad contracts for next season.

Flanker Tom Kibble, centre Isaac Lucas, hooker Sean Farrell, lock Michael Wood and flyhalf Carter Gordon, who flies out for Ireland and Scotland with the Australian Schoolboys on Sunday, have also nailed contracts.

“It’s unreal to get an opportunity and have that chance to learn around the Reds squad with props like the Smith brothers and Taniela (Tupou),” Nasser said.

“Dad gave me tips and hints when I was young but his advice is really just to enjoy it and play the way I want to play.

“He’s pretty proud of what he did in his day but he’s not one to show off so his old jerseys are in an old kit bag somewhere not up on the walls at home.”

Kibble, 18, has made a stunning rise since playing for Brisbane Boys’ College last year. He won a top grade premiership with GPS in August, played for Queensland Country in last month’s National Rugby Championship grand final and now finds himself part of the Reds’ plans.
