TWO-try Waratahs star Alofa Alofa has declared he is determined to win the Super Rugby title and leave a legacy before his defection to French rugby.
Alofa, who scored a crucial double in last Saturday’s victory over the Brumbies, stunned many of his NSW teammates when he revealed he is heading to club La Rochelle after his breakout season.
“I’m happy I’m going, but my first priority is the Waratahs, I’m signed here and I want to get this job done,” Alofa said.
“I want to leave a good legacy over here, try to be the first NSW Waratahs to win the premiership.”
Alofa, 23, has been playing on a meagre rookie contract this season with NSW, and the French offer was too good to refuse.
“It happened pretty quickly, at the end of the day it’s business, our bodies are a business,” Alofa said.
“I am more looking out for my family, but I’m not too worried about France at the moment, I am just worried about the next game and into the finals.”
Meanwhile, if NSW secure a home semi-final and grand final, it is unlikely that either game will have an afternoon kick-off.
While Sydney crowds much prefer earlier kick-off times, television viewership falls away considerably and the broadcasters want bang for their buck.
While players also prefer playing in sunshine, the Tahs won’t mind as long as they’re not travelling to South Africa or New Zealand for a knockout game.
Utility back Jono Lance is the only player in the side to have experienced a premiership win when he was part of the 2011 Queensland team, and knows how crucial home finals are.
“Especially with South Africa in the competition, it’s hard in finals to make that one-week trip over and then have to head somewhere else,” Lance said.
“I think that’s why complacency won’t be an issue for us, because we understand it is very important to get the home semi and very important to keep the momentum going.”
Lance revealed that the Tahs have much in common with the 2011 Reds.
“I think there’s plenty of similarities, Queensland had a few tough years before they made their charge,” Lance said.
“Everyone always speaks about the Waratahs’ tough years over the past.
“And just the vibe around the group and the momentum we’re building at the right time of the year is very similar to how it felt a few years ago.
“We (Queensland) managed to win with a few injuries at the back end of the year and I think that gave us confidence that anything was possible in the finals.
“I think we’ve got that opportunity the next few weeks.”
