The Southport School started their GPS Rugby campaign in style last weekend; now it’s time to get on a roll.
Winger Hamish Roberts nailed a penalty goal in overtime to help TSS topple defending champions Nudgee College 21-20 in a Round 1 thriller but that result will count for little if they fail to back it up on the road against Churchie on Saturday.
Churchie lost 37-0 to Brisbane Boys’ College in Round 1.
“We’re looking to treat it exactly like we treated Nudgee,” flanker Michael van der Schyff said.
“We have got eight games this season, it’s not just the one game, so we’ll treat Churchie just like anyone else.”
The Year 11 student, who played in the school’s 16As side last winter, was stoked to be part of First XV action, following in the footsteps of older brother and 2018 captain Tom.
“He spoke to us (before the Nudgee game) and gave us a speech in the chapel,” he said of Tom.
“He was awesome, he just talked about staying calm and doing us proud. He really helped me especially.”
Having moved from the South African coastal city of Durban at age eight, van der Schyff started at TSS in grade two and gained an appreciation of their rugby program along the way.
“I watched my first rugby game in grade four I think with my brother here,” he said.
“It was my ultimate goal to run out in the tunnel there. The crowd is loud and it was just the best feeling in the world.”
