There’s a reason Sam Walker has already been snapped up by the Sydney Roosters but his halves partner was just as impressive against Toowoomba Grammar.

In a game that truly embodied the ‘two halves’ cliche, Walker and standout halfback Kalani Thomas helped Ipswich shake off the early yips to run out 46-18 winners and earn bragging rights in their 100th GPS meeting.

Toowoomba took a surprise lead after hooker Will Jauncey bagged an early try and extended the margin to 10-0 through a Jacob Goss penalty before Ipswich finally switched on with Thomas delivering a slick inside ball for prop Saipele Tamilo to crash over.

A second Goss penalty gave Toowoomba extra breathing room but it wasn’t to last as Walker and Thomas combined for a spectacular 70m try finished off by Walker in the left corner.

Toowoomba’s wide passing game continued to stretch the Ipswich defence with lock Hamish Muller making inroads, only to be foiled by poor handling from their outside backs.

Ipswich had no such troubles and punished Toowoomba in the 27th minute when a Harry Hanly fumble near his own goal-line gifted Christian Krause five points.

Kedan Chan-Tung then split apart the Toowoomba defence before feeding to an unmarked Malique Douthat-Sjoberg, who stretched the margin to 22-13.

A yellow card to Seamus King-Smith for infringing off the ball handed Toowoomba a one-man advantage just before halftime but the home defence held during his absence and when Xavier Stowers barged over for a 50th minute try, the game was all but up.

Further scores to Chan-Tung, Krause and Thomas blew the scoreline out before Hanly bagged a late consolation try.
