Brisbane club rugby looks likely for July 1 reboot with season to run into October

The nine Brisbane Premier Rugby club presidents are brainstorming the best sprint format to complete the season, with the possibility of a 12-round competition and three weeks of finals.

The July 1 reboot for Brisbane club rugby has created a bonus for premiers University of Queensland with trumps Con Foley and Scott Gale back from the cancelled US season.

The nine Premier Rugby club presidents are brainstorming the best sprint format with the possibility of a 12-round competition with three weeks of finals running into October.

“A tangible target date is something to cling onto because it’s exciting just to think about getting back on the field to play,” UQ president Michael Zaicek said.

“There are still lots of moving parts in terms of making the draw equitable, new field bookings, whether we use Ballymore for a bunch of club games and how limited we are with crowd numbers.”

Uni trainer Sam Harris has set up a home gym so first grade players swing through one at a time to stay on top of fitness until training resumes in June if positive health trends continue.

“There are quite a few different proposals on the table, including a six-team play-offs because of the short season, but the most important thing is we’ll get in some club rugby when it had looked remote at one stage,” Wests president Graham Brown said.

Gaven Head, the Queensland Rugby Union’s general manager of Community Rugby, said it was unknown what mass gatherings directive might exist on July 1 for no crowds, 100 or 500 well-spaced fans.

The news is even better for thousands of juniors and girls in sevens competitions because the plan is for a 15-week competition, including the school holidays, from June.

For the GPS schools rugby competition, the original July 18 season kick-off is looking solid as well as pre-season trials.
