The QGSSSA Australian rules football season is up and running with gusto, with round 2 a roaring success last weekend.
Each week www.couriermail.com.au and Questnews will feature the results, most
valuable players news and coaches plans moving forward.
STP V SOM HSE (SENIORS)
St Peter’s Lutheran College 6.5.41 def. Somerville House 2.1.13
Amelie Pesce, STP
Amelie has been a stand out in her first season of Aussie rules. She has explosive running power in the midfield and is able to push forward kicking 3 goals on the weekend.
Brogan Tomich, STP
Brogans ability to read the game has her hunting the ball and working her way out of traffic with ease. Often cleaning up across half back turning defence into attack.
Lara Bellamywells, STP
Lara had her best game of the season in the ruck this week. Winning most taps she gave our midfielders the best chance of a clearance leading to some quick goals through the game
Coach’s reflections (STP):
“Our defensive efforts in the second half were fantastic, not conceding a single point. The work rate and willingness to support each other without the ball in hand was impressive. We only had 12 players this week, so without anyone off the bench, our effort to keep them goalless in the second half was a huge effort under fatigue. We will continue to focus on communication during the game & defensive pressure.”
BGGS V STM (OPENS)
Brisbane Girls’ Grammar School 45 def. St Margaret’s Anglican Girls’s School 1
SOME HSE V BSHS (OPENS)
Somerville House 3.3.21 def. Brisbane State High School 0.1.1
Key performances (SOM HSE):
Florence Murphy kicking 3 goals in the first game against BSHS.
Francis Meggitt had a break out game against BSHS with some amazing release handballs which created multiple goals.
Players of the match (BSHS):
Steph Rosenthal, Meg Barber, Maddy Howard and Amy Kininmonth.
Coach’s reflections (BSHS):
“Midweek training was cancelled due to the storm, so we had a classroom session. In this session we learned some key tactics that will help us throughout the rest of the season. We’re not giving away any trade secrets, though! Despite not having anyone to sub off for, the girls held a good account for themselves, given the warm weather. Steph Rosenthal and Maddy Howard continue to run themselves into the ground each week.”
MBC V BSHS (OPENS)
Moreton Bay College 5.3.33 def. Brisbane State High School 0.0.0
Key performers (MBC):
Tess Hasker in the ruck giving her team free use of the ball.
Ash Jones’ white line fever which meant she attacked the ball and didn’t give up.
Coach’s reflections (BSHS):
“We need to continue to work on our kicking and marking. We are missing out on key opportunities to gain field position by making skill errors. While the scoreboard didn’t indicate it, we felt we had good control of both games. With some work on our forward craft, we feel the score lines will go our way. Our reinforcements are coming!”
MBC V IGGS (OPENS)
Moreton Bay College 76 def. Ipswich Girls’s Grammar School 0
Key performers (MBC):
Abby Blewiitt for her outside run and carry of the ball.
Isabelle Wieland, spoiling the ball from behind and her run-off halfback.
Most valued player effort (IGGS):
Charlotte Thomson
Coach’s reflections (IGGS):
“We will keep working to improve across the board and to work on our intensity.”
Coach’s reflections (MBC):
“In both games the Girls really took out on the field what they have been working on with Handball and Spreading to Space. They were first to the ball and they took a lot out of being beaten the first week and released they needed to better. Their attitude changed and were more hungry to get the ball.”
STH V IGGS (OPENS)
St Hilda’s 79 def. Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School 2
Players of the match (STH):
Cilla Monie, Kate Worboys, Sophie Sendall, India Rafter and Isabelle Mitchell.
Coach’s reflections (IGGS):
“No matter the score, we showed good defence at times, we scored our first points of the season and we competed well with the other teams. There were many occasions where we competed well and showed good energy and intensity.”
STP V SOME HSE (OPENS)
St Peter’s Lutheran College 4.6.30 def. Somerville House 2.0.12
Key performers (SOM HSE):
Ellie Jacob’s tackling pressure and run and carry to move the ball was exceptional.
Isabella Wheeler has made leaps and bounds in every game so far, with great running off the half back.
STH V STA (OPENS)
St Hilda’s 65 def. St Aidan’s 0
Many points were scored in a dominant performance by St Hilda’s opens, but the key moments came when defence stepped up to save goals.
Coach’s reflections (STH):
“The team had a wide variety of goal scorers. The only players who didn’t were in our backline who were committed to staying there for the entire game which is the biggest surprise of them all.
Marking is a skill that we will continue to develop so that we can capitalise on good field kicking decisions.”
STA V MBC (YEAR 10)
St Aidan’s 2.3.15 def. Moreton Bay College 1.2.7
Players of the match (STA):
Lara Fauster for controlling things behind the ball and contesting strongly at ground level to win the ball.
Sienna Gualandi, taking some great contested marks in the hands against tough opposition in the forward half that led to scoreboard pressure and repeated tackles and physicality
Bridie Smith and Lily Davies keeping St Aidan’s within goal range.
Coach’s reflections (STA):
“Key contested marks by Libby Oelkers, run and dash out of the middle by Adelaide Himstedt, clean hands in congestion by Sophie Hannaford and contested physicality brought by Morgan Jennings were key in coming back in the second half against MBC. Tireless efforts by mids and forwards against St Margaret’s, particularly around the stoppages and in the forward half, meant that St Aidan’s controlled field position and repeat scores against the opposition.”
STA V STM (YEAR 10)
St Aidan’s 1.10.16 def. St Margaret’s Anglican Girls’ School 0.0.0
Players of the match (STA):
Adelaide Himstedt, Libby Oelkers, Morgan Jennings and Sophie Hannaford.
St Aidan’s are currently top of the ladder sharing the lead with St Hilda’s.
The side’s coach is proud of the girls’ continued efforts.
“This Year 10 group at St Aidan’s came together late last year and have carried on this year building a great culture and strong connection among all the players. Their desire to learn and understand their role and support their teammates is exciting to watch.
Next week our focus will be to carry out our roles from the first bounce of the ball in the middle, start strong and build momentum,” coach said.
The top of the table clash is next Saturday.
The St Aidan’s Year 10 Team has not lost a game since commencing in the inaugural QGSSSA AFL Competition.
