‘Wild ride’: Aussie Olympic icon locks in his next move
Scotty James has been an absolute staple of Australia’s Winter Olympic rise but the snowboarding champ has locked in his next step.
Excitement is building for the 2026 Winter Olympics, with Aussie snowboarder Scotty James now set to get his own documentary.
Premiering next week, the film will follow two decades of his sporting career, showing home videos and competition highlights.
Directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Pat Dimon, Pipe Dream will be available on Netflix on December 19.
Fans will get a look into James’s life, which he shares with his life Chloe Stroll, and their one-year-old son Leo.
The film will also feature interviews with Stroll’s brother, Lance Stroll, who is a Formula 1 driver for Aston Martin.
It’ll also feature commentary from snowboarding celebrities like Shaun White and Chloe Kim, and Australian star Torah Bright.
“There were a lot of reasons I wanted to do a documentary, and a lot of things I discovered about myself and what other people thought about me through the process as well,” James revealed in a statement.
“I think we were able to really bring together a cool story about a kid from Australia who’s had to go through some challenging moments and was a snowboarder,” he said.
“It was really, really fun to create it and relatively emotional as well, I must say, but it’s felt like the timing was right and it’s now.
“To be on a platform like Netflix is going to be unbelievable, and a place where I’m really proud that the story is going to be told.”
While James was born and grew up in Victoria, he currently resides in Monaco to give himself quick access to half-pipe training grounds in Saas-Fee, Switzerland and the French Alps
He has just made his season debut at the World Cup, where he’ll get a handle on his upcoming competitors at the Olympic Games.
The World Cup only began this week at Secret Garden in China, and the finals will take place today, meaning no standings are live yet.
Afterwards, the competition will move on to Copper Mountain in the USA.
James will be looking to complete his trio of medals at the Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina — he won a Bronze medal in the 2018 PyeongChang games and silver in the 2022 Beijing games.
He came in second behind Japanese snowboarder Ayumu Hirano.
The 2026 Winter Olympic Games will take place in Italy, in both Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, giving us the title ‘Milano Cortina’.
This is the second time the two cities will act as host, having held the Winter Olympics in 1956.
It’ll be the fourth time Italy hosts the Olympic Games, with Rome having hosted the Summer Olympics in 1960, and the Winter Olympics also taking place in Turin in 2006.
Milan and Cortina D’Ampezzo have 400km between them, but Italy thankfully only has one time zone.
These games will feature 16 different sport disciplines, and will introduce ski mountaineering as a Winter Olympic event for the first time.
The Opening Ceremony will take place on Friday, February 6, and the games will close three weeks later on February 22.
James isn’t the only Aussie to watch, with Australian mogul skiers Jakara Anthony and Matt Graham claiming gold at the FIS World Cup in Ruka, Finland this week.
