Olympic sprinters 'frustrated' after Queensland government denies travel exemption

Exclusive: Families and friends may have been banned as spectators in Tokyo but they will be out in force at 24 Olympic live sites across the country.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has navigated the Tokyo Games bubble by taking the Games to the public starting in Brisbane on July 21.

With only six days to go until Brisbane finds out if it will host the 2032 Olympics, the AOC and Queensland Government will host a free live site at South Bank for the announcement.

Recent lockdowns have forced the cancellation of all New South Wales Sydney live sites but the AOC are also taking the Olympics Live concept into loungerooms courtesy of Channel 7.

AOC CEO Matt Carroll said the organisation was acutely aware of the changing COVID

situation in New South Wales.

“While we’re all excited for these Games the AOC are acutely aware of the changing COVID

situation in Sydney,” he said.

“With only days to go until the Games, the AOC, in keeping with the NSW Premier’s clear message has elected not to proceed with Olympics Live NSW sites.

“If conditions with respect to COVID were to significantly improve the AOC will reassess this decision, given the state’s Olympic heritage and enthusiasm for the Games.

“To support the people of NSW the AOC will be announcing more on Olympics Live in your

Loungeroom during the Games.

“The live sites will also be ideal places for the families and friends of our competing athletes to watch the competition live and feel as close as they possibly can to the excitement of the Games.”

President of AOC and Vice President of the International Olympic Committee John Coates added: “The spectator ban has no effect on the competition itself.”

“In anticipation of (no spectators) ... Olympic broadcasters and rights broadcasters have been doing work on fan engagement.

“Different countries around the world will have live crosses where athletes can talk to their mum and dad from the pool.

“There’s been a lot of innovative work.

“(At) Our live sites we will have the parents together and they’ll be able to chat with the athletes.”

Brisbane’s Olympic Live site will start two days before the Opening Ceremony to broadcast the result of the International Olympic Committee’s vote on the 2032 Olympic Games.

“The IOC’s vote has the potential to be transformational for Queensland and the Olympic and

Paralympic Games,” Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.

“Olympics Live sites at South Bank, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts and in Cairns are where you can share in the spirit of the Games and ... the IOC’s potentially historic decision.”
