Raygun performs with Aussie singer days after announcing retirement

Olympic breakdancer Raygun has hit the stage with an Aussie popstar, performing just days after announcing she was retiring.

Raygun announces retirement from competitive breakdancing

Raygun may be retired from official breakdancing competitions but it seems we haven’t seen the last of her infamous moves.

Earlier this week, Rachael Gunn announced she wouldn’t be competing in any more public events because the scrutiny on her after the Paris Olympics became too intense.

But Raygun returned to the spotlight on Saturday night with a cameo at Tones and I’s show at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena.

The crowd erupted when Tones and I brought Raygun onto the stage during her hit ‘Dance With Me’.

Introducing her on stage, Tones and I exclaimed: “Everybody, give it up for Australian Olympian, Raygun!”

Raygun gave a glimpse of her Olympic performance, swinging her arms around like a windmill and even holding the infamous kangaroo hop pose as streamers came down around her.

She was joined by Tones and I’s dance ensemble for a more contemporary dance, before the Aussie popstar embraced the Olympian.

Footage of the performance was shared by both Tones and I and Raygun on Instagram, and the reaction was predictably divided.

One person wrote: “That’s how you lift women up - well done!”

A second said: “Love that you celebrated this young woman - she deserves nothing less #womensupportingwomen.”

But not everyone was impressed, with one person commenting: “Please don’t encourage her!”

A second said: “Crazy how someone who’s got zero talent is becoming so popular.”

Another added: “Omg she sucks even more.....impossible.”

The performance comes days after Gunn confirmed was hanging up her sneakers and trackies and won’t break competitively again.

Better known by her now infamous B-Girl name “Raygun”, the 37-year-old shot to international notoriety with her unique performance as breaking made its Olympic debut in Paris this year.

Her moves and choice to wear the Australian tracksuit and cap have become the stuff of legend, one of the most popular outfits for this year’s Halloween celebrations back home and in the United States.

Gunn confirmed in a chat with radio station 2DayFM on Thursday she would no longer compete after all the backlash she received.

“I still break, but I don’t compete. I’m not going to compete any more. No, no,” she said.

“I was going to keep competing, for sure, but that seems really difficult for me to do now to approach a battle.

“I still dance and I still break, but that’s like in my living room with my partner.

“I think the level of scrutiny that’s going be there, and the people will be filming it, it’ll go online and it’s just not going to mean the same thing.

“It’s not going to be the same experience because of everything that’s at stake.”

While breaking has been axed from the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic schedule, Gunn said if it was still part of the Games, she would not consider competing.

Raygun last month challenged Australians to “do better than me” in a public competition with a cash prize.

But her bid to capitalise on her new-found fame may have hit a snag, with a bid to trademark her nickname ‘Raygun’ knocked back.

It remains to be seen whether we have seen the last of Raygun.

Gunn, who has previously explained she wasn’t as capable of acrobatic flips as other breakers, told Stellar her age has became a lightning rod for criticism.

“Our culture is very obsessed with age,” she said.

“I think it’s been a real sticking point for a lot of people: me essentially not knowing my place, what I should be doing with my time at this age; (in their view) it’s certainly not participating in that environment, even though I wasn’t the oldest there.

“I had a few people tell me on Facebook and on Instagram what I should be doing … that I should be picking the kids up from school.

“I saw a great meme that was like, ‘The world is hard on silly women’, with a photo of me.” “Women aren’t allowed to be silly,” she added.

“But I think if I was a man, I would have very quickly been given the larrikin title and people would have rallied behind me a lot more.
