Gout wins U18 title with national record

Breaking the magical 10-second barrier is getting closer and closer to a reality for Gout Gout after a record-breaking day at the Australian All Schools Championships.

The 16-year-old sprint sensation ran an extraordinary 10.04sec in the heats of the 100m but unfortunately it came with an asterix because of an illegal wind reading of +3.4 metres per second. (+2.5 is the legal limit).

But it was the heat run which raised Gout’s confidence that he could become the second Australian to go sub-10 sooner rather than later.

Gout's flying 10.04 in 100m heat!

“It’s now more in my head, it was definitely there but now it has accelerated” he said.

“I always knew I could push sub-10 but I didn’t think it could be so soon but I guess I will just keep doing what I do.

“I didn’t know what the wind was so I was pretty excited and then when I got told the wind I’m still excited but it definitely hurt a bit.”

INSIDE STORY: Gout Gout is the next big thing … and he knows it

The Queenslander, who has been compared to the great Usain Bolt, came in with a personal best of 10.29sec but his record-breaking performance now means he owns the U/16 and U/18 100m records.

On Saturday he will look to break his own 200m record as he continues to live up to the hype of being one of the most exciting prospects Australian athletics has seen for decades.

“(My dream) is the Olympic gold medal, winning it for Australia and to be the first sprinter to ever medal, that’s what keeps me up at night,” Gout said.

Patrick Johnson is the only Australian to go sub-10, clocking 9.93sec in Japan back in 2003.

Tokyo Olympics semi-finalist Rohan Browning ran an illegal 9.96sec with a +3.3 wind reading in Wollongong in 2021.
