Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout has proved why he’s a force to be reckoned with as he blew the field away on Saturday.

Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout has powered to another huge win, but wasn’t able to improve his PB in the 100m final at the Queensland Athletics Championships on Saturday.

The 17-year-old, who has emerged as one of the most exciting athletes on the planet, clocked a final time of 10.38 seconds to win the Under 20s 100m final by almost half a second.

It was only 0.01secs quicker than Gout went in winning his heat earlier on Saturday, and short of his fastest legal time of 10.17 seconds — achieved in the final at the Australian All-Schools Championships in Brisbane in December.

A day later, at that same meet, he not only recorded a personal best of 20.04 seconds over 200 metres, but also broke Peter Norman’s 56-year-old national record over the distance in the process, and Gout will get another crack at the 200m on Sunday.

In an interview with Fox Sports Australia this week, Gout’s manager James Templeton said he believed the 17-year-old was a chance to break the magical 10-second barrier for the 100 metres every time he races. Gout is also trying become the first Australian to go sub-20 seconds over 200 metres as well.

A so-called ‘race to sub-10’ has developed in 2025 with fellow Queenslander Lachlan Kennedy currently leading the charge after laying down an eye-catching 10.03 seconds at the Perth Track Classic earlier this month.

The 21-year-old Kennedy, Rohan Browning, Sebastian Sultana, Joshua Azzopardi and Jacob Despard all have faster times over the distance than Gout. The teenager, however, is the only one still at high school.

Only one other Australian, Patrick Johnson, has a time under 10 seconds over 100 metres. Johnson’s 9.93 seconds, set in 2003, remains the benchmark with Browning (10.01) and Matt Shirvington (10.03) coming closest.

Gout Gout will return to action on the track on Sunday when he competes in the 200m event.
