WESTS Tigers backrower Adam Blair admits he was not playing to the standard of football that his lofty pay-packet demanded.

A deal worth $600,000 a season, the 27-year-old was labelled as the game's most overpaid and overrated player, having under-performed in 2013.

The former Kiwi international has opened up on the criticism in the latest edition of NRL pre-season.

"When times are tough they look to their bigger players that haven't been standing up and obviously myself not being at my best they're going to pick someone up and I think it was just me," Blair told NRL Pre-season.

"It is nothing we can control we just have to go out there and live our days.

"Coming home and being with (my son) Harlem is what gets us away from everything. I just have to go out there and do my job and do it to the best of my ability."
