Penrith superstar Nathan Cleary has made a flying visit to San Diego to catch up with his partner, Matildas star Mary Fowler.
Cleary, one of the faces of the NRL’s Las Vegas extravaganza, took advantage of a quiet day in Penrith’s schedule to make the one hour plane flight to California.
He then jumped back on a plane in time for a Panthers’ signing session with fans in Las Vegas on Friday morning (AEDT).
Fowler played 24 minutes off the bench against Colombia as the Matildas lost 2-1 at Snapdragon Stadium.
While Cleary was jetting to meet Fowler, his teammates enjoyed a day off. Back rower Scott Sorensen was among a group of players who flew to the Grand Canyon while others took advantage of the down time with some cut-price shopping.
Cleary, however, only had one thing on his mind. The love story between he and Fowler has captured the imagination of the Australian sporting public, with the pair often sharing images of their time together on social media.
The Panthers superstar also took aim at radio broadcaster Marty Sheargold, who parted ways with Triple M this week after criticising the Matildas and women’s sport.
“It’s pretty sad that people are still saying that sort of stuff,” Cleary said.
“It’s just unnecessary.”
Sheargold said on his Drive show earlier this week that he “would rather hammer a nail through the head of [his] penis” than watch the Matildas in next year’s Asian Cup.
He also asked: “Got any men’s sport?”
He has been roundly condemned over the comments and Cleary was clearly unimpressed.
