Gold Coast players didn’t respond to a loss with enough anguish after a dressing room spray so they were dragged back, some in their undies, others wearing towels, for a second dressing down.
That was the story behind Titans coach Des Hasler’s extraordinary post-game fireworks following Sunday’s one-point loss to Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval.
Hasler let loose on his side in the visitor’s dressing room before players then started moving towards the showers and ice baths.
But it wasn’t over yet.
The veteran coach didn’t get the response he was after and reignited his anger by demanding the playing group return for a second bollocking.
“Des was furious,” said one player agent, whose client is a Gold Coast Titans player.
“He didn’t get the response he thought he should have got after the first blow-up so he dragged them out of the showers for another go.
“Des just didn’t want the players to think they could get away with that loss so easily – and he was right.
“All coaches want to see the players feel some pain, some hurt, after a loss so they weren’t getting away with it. Des went back for round two. I think Des showed more passion than some of his players.”
Wearing his Titans tracksuit top, Hasler waved his arms around frantically while telling players to return to the main area of the dressing room.
Fox League vision showed Titans owner Rebecca Frizelle in the dressing sheds post-game offering support.
She was then seen scurrying away after hearing the ferocity of Hasler’s heavy player rebuke.
Five players, including David Fifita and Klese Haas, came out from the showers sheepishly still in their Speedos and footy shorts with two players wearing only a towel.
Hasler stood waiting by a chair with his hands on his hips.
“The players had gone in for a shower and Des said: ‘Pig’s arse, get back out here’,” said Fox League’s Matty Johns.
This masthead reached out to Hasler but he preferred not to comment.
No coach has shown so much aggression and passion post-game this season.
The Titans and Tigers engaged in the worst game of the NRL season on Sunday, a forgettable 80 minutes marred by blunders, bumbles and fumbles.
A side clearly down on confidence, Gold Coast led at halftime, and again late, before losing on full time. The Titans scored four tries to three but the loss left Hasler fuming.
In a remarkable milestone, Hasler will coach his 500th NRL game in Saturday’s match against the Warriors in Auckland.
