Titans fullback Jarryd Hayne won’t be rushed into decision on future

JARRYD Hayne has a $1.2 million deal sitting on the table to stay at the Gold Coast, but the classy fullback could find himself on the radar of other NRL clubs.

JARRYD Hayne still has a month to prove his worth to rival NRL clubs.

The 29-year-old has a $1.2 million deal on the table to stay at the Gold Coast but his manager said Hayne won’t rush into a decision.

The superstar fullback’s reputation has copped a hammering this year as talk has grown about a rift between he and Titans coach Neil Henry.

But Hayne showed in his return from injury in Saturday’s shock win over Cronulla that when it comes to playing the game, his football still speaks for itself.

Whether that is enough to get other NRL clubs interested in signing him for next year will be answered in the coming weeks.

Hayne’s long-time manager Wayne Beavis said Hayne has until the end of next month to decide if he will take up an option in his favour to stay at the Titans.

“He is very much his own man,” Beavis said.

“It is up to him to make up his own mind before we start doing anything. We have had no in-depth discussions about the future. We never do.

“We will play it by ear and press buttons when we need to.”

While there has been plenty of speculation about a growing distance between Hayne and Henry, Beavis said Hayne was enjoying life on the Gold Coast.

Asked if Hayne wanted to stay in the NRL, Beavis said: “I think so. He has never told me he doesn’t want to. And he has a different landscape he is dealing with now.

“He has a young baby, so that makes quite a bit of a difference.”

Hayne also addressed the issue following the Titans’ win, saying he would start the process after this Saturday’s game against the Newcastle Knights.

“I’m not thinking about that at the moment. I’ve got other things on my plate,” he said.

“(Saturday night) was about getting our season back on track. We did that.”

With James Tedesco committing his future to the Sydney Roosters, Hayne could well find himself on the radar of other NRL clubs.

While there is a belief Hayne can be difficult for some coaches to handle, there is no questioning his ability.

Hayne showed flashes of his best in his first game since round two. He said he was “pretty sore, pretty banged up” after the game. But he hardly looked like he’d been out for six weeks.

While Hayne is no chance of being picked for Australia in the upcoming rep round, he has ruled himself out of playing for Fiji against Samoa so he can concentrate on getting fit for a State of Origin return.

“That’s the week where I won’t have it off,” he said.

“We’ll get that extra conditioning in and try and catch up with the rest of the guys because I need it. We’ve got two to three games after that and then it’s into Origin season.”

Hayne hasn’t played Origin since 2014.
