After Destiny Brill opened Queensland’s account, the Blues hit back with sensational tries to Emma Tonegato and Kirra Dibb in quick succession.

The Blues took a 12-10 lead into halftime in a physical contest fitting of State of Origin.

Tonegato, who chased down a grubber kick to score, was asked by Channel 9’s Emma Lawrence what she made of the opening 40 minutes as she walked from the field.

“It was good out there,” she said.

“Heaps of fun, glad to be out here. But yeah, it’s f***ing tough out there — oh sh*t, sorry. I’m just so in the game.”

Lawrence chuckled and gave a wry smile and viewers couldn’t get enough of Tonegato’s slip of the tongue.

Triple M’s Liam Flanagan tweeted: “Emma Tonegato summing up the first half perfectly in a live cross.”

Sportswriter Nick Campton said: “No going back to sevens now for Tonegato. She’s rugby league to the bone.”

Sports journalist John Davidson joked: “Rugby league — never change.”

CODE Sports’ Lachlan McKirdy added: “My favourite thing about people who drop the f-bomb on live TV is that they usually follow it up with ‘Oh sh*t, sorry’.”

NSW and Queensland crossed for a try each in the second half but two penalty goals and Rachael Pearson’s more accurate conversion kicking proved the difference as the Blues ran out six-point winners.

Isabelle Kelly was awarded the Nellie Doherty medal for player of the match in what was NSW’s first women’s State of Origin win since 2019.

The format of the women’s Origin series will change next year from a stand-alone match to a two-game series.

In the event of a tie, the Origin shield will be awarded to the previous year’s winner.
