Titans v Tigers: Pat Richards last minute field goal secures dramatic win over gallant Gold Coast

Tigers 19 Titans 18: TIGERS winger Pat Richards has nailed a 40m field goal with just two seconds on the clock to claim a 19-18 victory over the Titans.

AS skipper of the Gold Coast Titans it’s his duty to lead from the front but at the death it was his own costly handling error that gave Wests Tigers the chance to snatch victory on the siren.

In an utterly heart-breaking defeat for a Titans organisation that’s been to hell and back in a fortnight, gifted Tigers sharpshooter Pat Richards nailed a 40m field goal with just two seconds on the clock to secure a stunning 19-18 win at Cbus Super Stadium.

“I’m not really happy with a few of the things I did out there,” Myles said.

“The team’s effort was fantastic but in today’s game one point, a couple of errors all adds up to a loss.

“Maybe a few of our senior blokes, myself included, the finer side of our football needs to sharpen up a little bit.”

Myles was there trying to put heat on Richards as his shot sailed over, but couldn’t quite get a finger on the ball.

“I thought my head was big enough to get in the way of it but it wasn’t,” Myles said.

“He is a pretty special dude Patty Richards in regards to kicking the ball. I probably should’ve made more of an effort getting in front of that.”

After the past two weeks for the Titans it looked like the footy gods were about to smile on them.

They were down for most the second half but James Roberts, who ended the night with a double, levelled scores with 10 minutes to go and the Titans were coming home hard.

Ryan James had an eventful night. He scored a strong first half try, was sin-binned for a deliberate offside to save a try and like Myles also coughed up possession attacking the line when the Titans were setting up for a field goal to win it.

It was that sort of night for the Titans. Much promise, better cohesion in attack and commitment in defence. But a litany of handling errors or soft penalties that kept them from truly reaching their potential.

In the end they only had themselves to blame. Although perhaps they would’ve pointed some sharp words at the referees if not for the new NRL edict banning any discussion on the performance of officials.

Tigers five-eighth Mitchell Moses produced what Titans coach Neil Henry described as a good old fashioned “coat hanger” on William Zillman with 12 minutes to go, but was spared a send-off.

Henry had to restrain himself from letting his true feelings known when asked in the press conference if it was a send off offence.

“I can’t comment on referees anymore … but someone in the crowd said…” Henry joked.

“It’s a hard one. It was a reaction against where Zilly was running and they’re always hard to pull back. They will look at it, that’s the process and whether or not he has a case to answer.

“It was a fair whack wasn’t it? He was off balance but he is okay. It was the old coat hanger wasn’t it?”

Henry said he was proud of the commitment of the team to fight back against the Tigers, but they still just lacked the polish to put enough points on the board.

“Happy with the effort and attitude but that doesn’t get you two points at times,” he said.

“Our execution has to be better and our ball control has to be better.”
