Selfless Titan Tyrone Peachey proving his Origin credentials

After a slow start to the year, there were murmurs Tyrone Peachey’s Origin jersey was slipping out of his reach. But his value as a game-breaking utility skyrocketed after a bizarre game against Newcastle.

Tyrone Peachey’s positional shifts against Newcastle read like an origami instruction kit but Titans coach Garth Brennan believes there’s no substitute when it comes to a game-breaking utility.

The former Panther shifted into the left-edge back row after 12 minutes to account for Ryan James’ injury on Sunday and found himself on the move again when winger Anthony Don left the field for a HIA.

Such versatility is rare — and a willingness to move even more so — but Peachey has matured into the Titans’ ultimate team man this season.

“I spoke to him at halftime and said sorry for chopping and changing him from one side to the other and back and forth but he said, ‘Coach, I’ll do whatever’s best for the team’,” Brennan said.

“He showed there (on Sunday) what was best for the team, he jumped in on the edge and did a great job.”

Peachey was his own harshest critic after a shaky start to the season but his composure under fire typified Gold Coast’s own resurgence against the Knights.

“There was a lot of expectation on the Titans at the start of the year and I think the players felt that and were trying too hard,” said Brennan.

“Forcing passes and trying to create something where at this time of the year it’s very much about completing your sets, building some combinations.

“The more time we can spend together and keeping some players on the park the better we’re going to be.

“Belief is a big thing. We’ve had a win and a bit of expectation and pressure has come off the players and my message to them has been to go out there and enjoy their footy.”
