ON SUNDAY, the Wests Tigers find out just how good they’re really travelling.
Victories over Gold Coast and St George Illawarra have been a solid start under new coach Jason Taylor but against premiers South Sydney, they’re rumbling against the heavyweight champions.
Tigers coach Jason Taylor labelled it a “litmus test” at the club’s final training session at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday, labelling George Burgess and Isaac Luke as the Rabbitohs most dangerous players.
“This is a great challenge for us. We’ve worked really hard and we’ve had two solid wins but this is the real litmus test to see where we’re at and we’re looking forward to the challenge,” Taylor said.
BIG MEN: Woods says battle against Burgess will be fun
“In my opinion Isaac Luke and George Burgess just in their two games so far have been their two best players. We’re going to have to work really hard to control what they do.
“You’ve got to control the speed of the play-the-ball. If a guy like Burgess runs the ball and plays it with three guys on the ground then good luck with Isaac Luke on the next tackle.”
Taylor rated the Rabbitohs as the best side in the competition and said the Tigers still had huge scope for improvement, particularly in attack.
“There’s no doubt they’ve proved they’re the best side in the competition at the moment, the win last week was really strong, the World Club Challenge and the premiership last year so there’s no debating that one,” Taylor said.
“We’ve done some good things in our last couple of games but not for long enough periods.
“You’ve got to play for the 80 minutes, they win most of their games in the back end and it was pretty impressive the way they came over the top of the Roosters last week, that’s not easy to do.
“The big thing with Souths is you’ve got to be there with 20 minutes to go. Our defence has been pretty strong for most of the game but as far as controlling the ball and attacking well we’ve only done that in patches, we want to improve that.”
