Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy hoses down talk of a Battle of Brookvale repeat

Eight years after the original and twelve months since the sequel, Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy has hosed down talk of another brawl between Manly and Melbourne.

Battle of Brookvale version 2.0?

Not on Storm coach Craig Bellamy’s watch.

The premiership mastermind has defused talk of any riotous argy bargy in Saturday’s clash with Manly Sea Eagles at hostile Brookvale Oval with the minor premiership up for grabs.

The Battle of Brookvale in 2011 resulted in 10 players from Manly and Melbourne being suspended for their involvement in the wild all-in brawl.

“That’s a long time ago,” Bellamy said.

“It was two different teams and a little bit of a different era too, some of the things that happened that night are probably never going to happen again in the game and I think for good reason.

“We’re certainly not proud of what happened that night and I don’t think Manly would be proud of what happened that night either but it happened and could still happen.”

Manly and Melbourne were embroiled in another brawl last year when Curtis Scott was sent off for punching Dylan Walker.

Bellamy has also thrown his support behind Josh Addo-Carr, who was racially vilified on Instagram after last Sunday’s win over Gold Coast Titans.

“I know it happened to Latrell two or three weeks ago,” Bellamy said.

“We’ll support JAC (Josh Addo-Carr) all the way there, as a society, as a sport, that’s just not on.”

Addo-Carr received the support of Storm teammates and opposition players after uploading a screenshot of the derogatory word, the Herald Sun has elected not to publish, used in a comment.

Storm chief executive Dave Donaghy reiterated the club’s “zero-tolerance” towards the “abhorrent” racist comment.

“There is no place for racial abuse in society,” Donaghy said in a statement.

“Storm is proud of the diversity of our playing group and staff which we celebrated this week during multicultural round against the Titans, making these comments even more abhorrent.

“Storm has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to racial vilification and we will stand behind Josh, or any of our players, in calling out racism. It has no place in sport and no place in society.”
