GRANDPARENTS always give it to you straight. Just ask Nate Myles.

Myles’ pop, a passionate Maroons fan, told the veteran forward this week: “You won’t be in the Queensland side the way you are playing’’.

Myles appreciated the brutal honesty from his grandfather and the former Titans captain know he has a battle on his hands to retain his Origin place.

Myles has been solid for his new club Manly this year but has struggled to replicate the form that made him a crucial part of Queensland’s engine during Mal Meninga’s decade in charge.

Myles knows his position is in danger but he can prove a point against the Broncos on Saturday when he plays opposite the man who is in line take his spot, Josh McGuire.

McGuire effectively took Myles’ Kangaroos Test jersey but both could fit in Kevin Walters’ first Queensland team which is picked in a fortnight.

Myles said McGuire deserved to be a representative player.

“The Test team they picked was a fantastic side,” he said. “I am not going to put my hand up and expect a jersey.

“It has never been laid on the table for me. It has to be earned and it always has been with Queensland.

“With a new coach everyone has to make sure they are playing their best. I have a shit load of room to improve.

“I spoke to my grandad two days ago and he told me I won’t be in this Queensland side because of the way I’m playing. It is always good to get that honesty from him.’’

McGuire will probably start for Queensland in the Origin opener on June 1 but Myles should retain a position on the bench.

Myles has played 29 games for Queensland in one of the most successful Origin careers of any forward.

Right now, though, Myles is playing in a Manly team being smashed with injuries and struggling for combinations.

His role in the team is also significantly different to his years at the Titans.

“I have gone from being captain to being in a side that has leaders all over the park,” he said.

“We are nowhere near where we need to be and consistency is the issue.

“Individually you can be a good player and standout but what’s the point if you are not winning?

“The two sides at the top of the competition (Broncos and Cowboys) know each other back to front and their one to 17 doesn’t change too much. That’s what we are working towards as well.

“I think it will be a great challenge for our forwards and we are pumped for it.’’
