New Roosters signing Angus Crichton has his mind set on winning three straight premierships

Nobody can accuse Angus Crichton of resting on his laurels now he’s signed with the Roosters - the ace backrower has his mind on winning three premierships in three years.

Angus Crichton, as a boy, slept with a stuffed Rooster in his bed.

Which is some image, right?

And still, nothing on what he says next.

“I want to win premierships,” the new Roosters recruit said. “Over the next three years, my head is all about winning three competitions.”

Only a month after switching from arch rivals South Sydney, Crichton is so enamoured with his new Bondi home that, apart from talking openly about chasing three straight titles, the star backrower has also revealed “I plan on finishing my career here”.

Which, at 22, is no small thing.

Yet after opening his NRL career across town at Redfern, where he debuted for the Bunnies in 2016, this mad Roosters fan now admits to having always wanted to join the famed foundation club he cheered on as a child.

Crichton has signed with the Roosters for 2019.

“Oh, 100 per cent, mate,” Crichton said. “I grew up with a Roosters jersey on my wall; slept with a stuffed Rooster in my bed.

“That’s the kind of kid I was.

“And because of that upbringing, it sticks with you for life.

“So to have this opportunity, it’s a childhood dream. And now I’m at the Roosters, I plan on finishing my career here.”

At which point you reckon a couple of Australian rugby types may have just choked on their Sunday breakfast cereal.

Especially when recalling how only a few months back, Crichton — once an Australian Schoolboy rugby star — conceded that he could return to the 15-man code, especially given his current Roosters deal would be up in time for the 2023 World Cup in France.

So as for those plans really being shelved?

“I’m signed with the Roosters for three years and that’s where all my attention is,” Crichton says. “I’ve got no focus elsewhere.

“Over the next three years, my head is all about winning three competitions.”

And this, of course, is some claim in itself, given no club has gone back-to-back in a unified competition since Brisbane 25 years ago.

“Ask any player at this time of year if they think they’re going to win, doesn’t matter which club — Parramatta, the Sharks, Bulldogs — they’re all going to say ‘yes, we think we can win it’,” Crichton says.

“And I’m no different. I’m a competitive person.

“That’s the way I was raised, the way I play the game.

“And I know I’m not just going to walk into this team. There are so many great players here, I’m going to have to earn my spot.

“But every time you go into (a season) you go in to win the premiership.

“Especially at a club like the Roosters were everyone strives for greatness.

“Life’s better when you’re winning and that’s where my head is ... I want to win games, I want to win premierships.”
