Shaun Fensom signs with Brisbane Broncos for 2019

A fan favourite for his tireless tackling and no-frills attitude, former Raider and Cowboy Shaun Fensom will be a handy depth signing for the Broncos and has been welcomed by his new teammates.

Broncos hooker Andrew McCullough says Brisbane has snared a player that “won’t let you down” in NRL cult hero Shaun Fensom.

Fensom on Monday joined the Broncos after being offered an NRL lifeline by new coach Anthony Seibold.

The 174-game former Raiders and Cowboys forward was almost lost to the NRL after North Queensland did not offer him a contract extension beyond last season.

But Fensom became Seibold’s first signing at the Broncos after inking a one-year deal.

It is hard to see him featuring in Seibold’s Round 1 team, but McCullough said Fensom was a player the Broncos could rely on when needed.

“Shaun has been at a couple of clubs and you can see why clubs have wanted him,” he said.

“He works hard and competes hard. That’s what we need in this team.

“We’ve got a lot of powerful guys who can do a lot of things, but Shaun is a guy that definitely competes.

“Talking to other guys from previous clubs, they’ve said they loved playing with him and he’s not going to let you down.

“He’s a bit older and we’ve got a lot of young guys. It’s nice to have that older guy that’s played plenty of first grade and you know will get a job done when needed.

“You know he won’t let you down.”

Fensom, 30, was the heartbreak story of the 2017 NRL grand final, severely breaking his leg inside the opening three minutes of the loss to Melbourne.

He missed the first two months of last season before returning from the injury and playing 14 games in his second season at North Queensland.

Fensom played 139 games for Canberra between 2009 and 2016.
