Canberra coach Ricky Stuart has slammed Sydney Roosters fans for the lack of sportsmanship shown to his five-eighth and playmaker Jack Wighton.
Wighton on Sunday became the first player to win the Clive Churchill Medal in a losing side since 2013, when Manly’s Daly Cherry-Evans was awarded best on ground in the Sea Eagles 22-18 loss to current premiers, the Roosters.
The decision to pick Wighton for the Clive Churchill Medal didn’t go down well with the Roosters faithful who made their feelings heard loud and clear.

“The best player on the field got the award tonight,” Stuart said after the game.
“Whether those people out there who booed agree with it or not, Jack didn’t pick it.
“Three legends of our game pick the award and I think they know a little bit more than the wombats sitting behind the goal post.”

A devastated Wighton, who is only the fourth player to achieve the feat of winning man of the match in a losing outfit, said the medal didn’t soften the blow of the 14-8 defeat.
“It was a numb feeling to achieve something so big but it’s probably the worst moment of my life losing the grand final,” Wighton said.
“But I’m extremely proud of the boys and I love every single on of them.
“It’s just a really weird feeling at the minute.”

All class... unlike Roosters fans who booed Billy Slater in 2018 and followed it up with Jack Wighton treatment tonight
I think Roosters fans booing Jack Wighton for winning the Clive Churchill medal was the wrong call.

You would think the #Roosters fans would be happy they won. Instead they showed their bad sportsmanship booing @JackWighton for his well deserved Churchill medal award. #NRLRoostersRaiders #NRLGF

Nick Politis.....the fact the imbeciles that support your club sat there and booed Jack Wighton....is the reason that 99% of league fans whose teams werenât playing tonight supported Canberra. What a putrid culture, and club. #NRLGF

Not sure what bigger shock - seeing so many @sydneyroosters this far west, or hearing them boo Jack Wighton as collected CC Medal. Ordinary form ...
