Bubbling tension ahead of Wednesday’s State of Origin match has fuelled a hilarious war of words between Queensland and NSW’s state water services.
Queensland’s Seqwater on Wednesday afternoon posted a video of three workers painting its Maroon Dam wall in the colour maroon, and asked Sydney Water if it was equally devoted to showing its support.
“If any New South Welshians stray on to Seqwater’s network this week, there’ll be no denying they’re on #Queenslander territory. We splashed Maroon Dam – closest to the NSW border – with our new favourite colour. How devoted to State of Origin are you Sydney Water?” Seqwater tweeted.
It didn’t take long for Sydney Water to post its blistering response, sharing an image of the entire Sydney Harbour Bridge lit up in blue with a light display reading, “Blues 3-0”.
“Nice touch Seqwater … shame about that awful colour though,” Sydney Water tweeted, adding the sledge: “Maroon Dam eh? Is that where Billy tossed Dane Gagai’s Origin career?”
“Just like the waters of Sydney’s pristine beaches, we’re Blue through and through. Here’s one of our quaint little waterways in a nice shade of blue.”
The sparring match continued with Seqwater tweeting an old replay of a Maroons’ player ripping a Blues’ player across a boundary line.

“Awful colour? At least it’s not navy … You’re game for bringing up players being tossed … we’ll just leave this here,” it tweeted.
Sydney Water struck back again, accusing the Queenslanders of having to search extra hard to find their example.
“Ahhhh touché. We see you’ve dug deep into the archives and found some rare footage of a Queenslander in an even contest,” it said.
The tweet included a heading from satirical site The Betoota Advocate that read: “Sam Thaiday surprised he didn’t get the call up a third-man-in for Gallen fight”.
It also included a bulging list of 32 Maroons players that had been declared “dodgy”.
NSW are the favourites for Game 1, a position reigning champions Queensland have become familiar with.
The opening match in this year’s series kicks off at 8.05pm AEST at Adelaide Oval.
